Fort Sumter an island fort located in Charleston Harbor, SC most famous for being the site of the first battle of the American Civil War
Anaconda Plan strategy the Union would use to blockade the Southern coast including the Mississippi River, named for a large snake that coils around to suffocate its prey
Blockade Runners private Southern ships that attempted to "break" the Union blockade and trade cotton with European countries for manufactured goods
H.L. Hunley first submarine (owned by Confederates) to sink an enemy ship during wartime. It sank afterwards in Charleston harbor.
Emancipation Proclamation made by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 that all slaves under the Confederacy were from then on “forever free.”
Gettysburg Major turning point battle of the Civil War, fought in south-central Pennsylvania in 1863. It ended in a major victory for the North
13th Amendment abolished slavery as an institution in all U.S. states and territories. Also outlawed involuntary servitude, where a person is coerced to work in order to pay off debts.
14th Amendment granted citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the United States—including formerly enslaved people—and guaranteed all citizens “equal protection of the laws.”
15th Amendment prohibits the federal and state governments from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
Robert Smalls Former slave who stole a Confederate ship and brought 16 black men, women and children passengers from slavery to freedom. From slave to sailor to Congressman.
Abraham Lincoln 16th President of the US during the Civil War. His goal was to preserve the Union.
General Robert E. Lee Commanding General of the Confederate Armies. Didn't believe in slavery. Forced to surrender to the Union at Appomattox.
General George McClellan general for the Union; nicknamed "Tardy George" because of his failure to move troops to Richmond, VA and take the capital from the Confederates.
General William Tecumseh Sherman Union General who used total war. Marched from ATL-SAV in famous “March to the Sea.”
General Ambrose Burnside Union general who replaced McClellan . He led troops to Richmond into waiting confederates and lost 12,000 men at Fredericksburg.
General Stonewall Jackson one of the south's (confederacy) most successful general's during the Civil War
