Foreign Policy | A country's policies towards other countries. |
Spanish- American War | fought on two fronts- the Pacific and the Caribbean. At the end American forces were left in occupation of the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Guam. |
Yellow Journalism | Deliberately sensationalizing the news in order to sell more newspapers |
USS Maine | A navy ship that was sent to Cuba to protect the lives and property of Americans. It was sunk by an explosion that the newspapers blamed on Spain, pushing the US further toward war. |
Theodore Roosevelt | Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1898, he raised a volunteer force, known as the “Rough Riders” who helped defeat Spanish forces in Cuba. |
Imperialism | a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force |
Panama Canal | Channel in Central America that connects Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; symbol of U.S. power/strength. |
Big Stick Policy | Roosevelt barred European countries from using force to collect debts from countries in Central America. He became the “world’s policeman” saying he would “walk softly but carry a big stick” |
Dollar Diplomacy | President Taft’s use of American investment ($) to promote American foreign policy goals |
Isolationism | A belief that one's nation should stay out of the wars and conflicts that don't concern it. |
Queen Liliuokalani | Last monarch of Hawaii; overthrown by U.S. forces |
Havana Harbor | Location of U.S.S. Maine explosion in Cuba |
Philippines | Located in the Pacific Ocean. Former territory of Spain and, after the Spanish-American War, the U.S. Today, the Philippines are an independent nation. |
Annexation | To attach as an addition; to add a territory to one's own territory to form a larger country. |
Buffalo Soldiers | U.S. Army regiments that primarily consisted of African Americans. |
Cuba | Located in the Caribbean Sea. Former territory of Spain. Today, Cuba is an independent nation. |
Guam | Located in the Pacific Ocean. Former territory of Spain. Today, Guam is a territory of the U.S. |
Monroe Doctrine | President James Monroe's doctrine which warned European powers to not interfere in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. |
Puerto Rico | Located in the Caribbean Sea. Former territory of Spain. Today, Puerto Rico is a territory of the U.S. |
Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine | Stated that the U.S. would intervene as a last resort to ensure that other nations in the Western Hemisphere met their obligations to international creditors. |
Rough Riders | A nickname given to the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, one of three volunteer regiments in the Spanish-American War. |
Battle of San Juan Hill | A major battle of the Spanish-American War which was the most significant U.S. land victory of the War. |
Moral Diplomacy | A form of diplomacy proposed by President Woodrow Wilson. Wilson wanted to promote peace and human values instead of gain territories. |
President William McKinley | 25th president of the U.S.; McKinley was assassinated in 1901. He was president during the Spanish-American War. |
