Development of the Constitution

| Articles of Confederation | A document written in 1777 that created the first central government for the United States of America, which will replaced by the Constitution in 1887. |
| Ratification | An official approval. |
| Bill of Rights | (1) The first ten amendments to the US Constitution. (2) A list of freedoms that the government promises to protect. |
| Shays' Rebellion | An uprising of farmers in Massachusetts, led by Daniel Shays, to protest against high taxes, heavy debt, and farm foreclosures. |
| Constitutional Convention | A meeting held in 1787 in Philadelphia at which delegates from the states wrote a new Constitution. |
| Popular Sovereignty | The idea that political authority belongs to the people. |
| Anti-Federalist | People who opposed the ratification of the US Constitution. |
| Federalist | People who supported the ratification of the US Constitution. |
| Federalist Papers | A series of essays that defended and explained the US Constitution and tried to reassure Americans that the states would not be overpowered by the proposed central government. |
