13th Amendment A law added to the constitution that made slavery illegal.
14th Amendment A law added to the constitution that made freed African Americans equal citizens
15th Amendment A law added to the constitution that gave African American men the right to vote.
Abolish To get rid of
Abraham Lincoln The president of the U.S. during the Civil War.
Amendment Law added to the Constitution.
Andrew Johnson The president of the U.S. after Lincoln was assassinated.
Black Codes Laws passed in the South to limit the rights of African Americans.
Carpetbaggers a person from the northern states who went to the South after the Civil War to profit from the Reconstruction.
Freedmen African Americans freed from slavery.
Freedmen’s Bureau A government agency designed to help freedmen get work, education, and medical care.
Grandfather Clause A law that said that if a person’s grandfather could vote before 1865 they did not have to pay poll taxes or take literacy tests in order to vote.
Great Migration The movement of African Americans from the south to Northern cities.
Impeach Charging a government official with a crime.
Jim Crow Laws Laws that kept African Americans and whites separate. (segregation).
Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan -Abolished Slavery -States pay war debt - No vote for freedmen
Ku Klux Klan/ White League Hate groups who tried to keep African Americans from using their rights through violence and threats.
Literacy Test A reading test given in the south that a person had to pass in order to vote.
Lincoln's Reconstruction Plan -Abolished Slavery -10% of the South had to say they were loyal to the U.S.
Plessy v. Ferguson A court case in which the Supreme Court ruled that segregation was legal as long as things were “separate, but equal.”
Poll Vote
Poll Tax Money that had to be paid to the government in order to vote.
Radical Republican A group in the government who wanted to punish the South after the Civil War and fought for rights for freedmen.
Radical Republican Reconstruction Plan -Equal rights for freedmen -U.S. military to occupy the south -Voting Rights for African Americans -All states must agree to the 13th,14th, and 15th amendments
Reconstruction The time after the Civil War when the North and South become one country again and the South is rebuilt.
Scalawags a white Southerner who worked with northern Republicans during Reconstruction, often for personal gain.
Segregation The separation of people based on race.
Sharecropping When Freedmen rented land to farm by paying the landowner a part of their crop.
