Unit 2 terms you need to know for the Human Geo final!

Arithmetic Density Total number of people per unit area of land
Physiological Density Total number of people per unit of arable (farming) land
Agricultural Density Measures total number of farmers per
Carrying Capacity The maximum population size an environment can sustain. (ex. Africa, they have a high population but not enough resources {food/water} for everyone)
Population Pyramids Graphs showing the age-sex (gender) ratio/distribution of a population.
Natural Increase Rate The difference between the crude birth rate and crude death rate of a group of people.

S-Curve
Demographic Transition Model (DTM) Shows the changes in growth that the world's population experienced and is still experiencing.
Malthusian Theory The theory that population growth grows exponentially, (in burst of numbers, ex. 0, 23, 50, 67) while food production grows arithmetically, (1, 2, 3 ,4). Population growth would surpass food production, leading to a hunger crisis.
Neo-Malthusian Theory
Pronatalist Encourages births and aim to increase population growth.
Anti-Natalist Policies Curb (lower) population growth by discouraging citizens from having children.
Ravenstein's Laws of Migration Laws to describe trends in migration *see page 145 in the textbook for more info.
Reasons for Changing Fertility Rates
Graying Population
Push and Pull Factors Economic, Demographic (population), Political, Enviornmental factors.
Intervening Obstacle An occurrence that holds migrants back, NOT by choice.
Refugee People who are forced to leave their country for fear of persecution or death
IDP Aka Internally displaced persons People who are forced to leave their homes but stay within their countries borders.
Asylum Seeker Seeking protection in a new country
