Why does a senator have a longer term than that of a representative? More of a democratic role/look more long term.
What are three formal qualifications for being elected to the senate? 30 years old Citizen for 9 years Residency in the state
What are the three types of power that congress has? Describe each briefly. Expressed- context of words Implied- Inherent-
What is the commerce power? Power to regulate interstate and forge in trade.
Why do we collect taxes? To meet public needs.
What is the debt ceiling? Does it mean anything? Our government spends more than we take in.
What is the role of congress in war? They declare war.
What is the Necessary and Proper Clause? What does it do? Gave them power to make laws.
What are the two ways that the Necesary and Proper clause can be interpreted? Strict or liberally.
What is included in the sate of the Union? A report to let the nation know how the nation is going
What is the job(s) of the Speaker of the House? Run the house
Who is in charge of the senate (office name)? President of the senate (Vice President)
What is the most important leadership position in Congress? What do they do? To get what their party wants done through congress.
Where is the bulk of the work done in congress? The committee.
What is a standing committee? a permanent committee that meets regularly.
What does the house rules committee do? They control what bills do.
What is a joint committee? What do they usually do? Members of both the house and the senate to investigate something.
What is the purpose of a conference committee? To make laws everyone will agree on.
How is it determined what committee a bill goes to? They die.
What is the subcommittees job in the bill process? Holds the first debate on the bill.
What happens to the majority of bills that are submitted to congress? There’s no time limit, they debate until times done.
What is included in the report the committee sends to the full House or Senate? Why they recommend it, summary of the bill, changes they made to the bill, comparison to the current laws.
Describe debate on the house and senate floor. A member speaks for the bill, then one against, then there goes a vote at the end of the debate.
Describe 4 things a president can do with a bill. -Sign it into law - Law without signature - Veto - Pocket veto
