| Queen Liliuokalani | Queen of Hawaii, took throne after her brother died. Tried to restore power to Hawaii after the Bayonet Constitution (took away native rights). |
| anti-imperialism | Being against imperialism (taking over other countries through diplomacy or military force). Examples include Andrew Carnegie and Mark Twain. |
| yellow journalism | An exaggerated form of journalism where factual information is over-exaggerated and sensationalized. |
| open door policy | US policy that allowed a system of equal trade and investment and guarantee of territorial integrity of China. |
| Spanish-American War | War where America supports Cubans and Filipinos being ruled by Spain. USS Maine explosion part of the reason it actually started. |
| Philippine War | AKA Philippine Insurrection - War that ended in America having the Philippines as a territory. Started because of Filipinos being upset about having no input in the fiture of the Philippines. |
| USS Maine | US Navy ship that exploded. Subject of yellow journalism (which contributed to Spanish-American War) |
| rough riders | The Rough Riders was a nickname given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry in the Spanish-American War. |
| territory | A geographic area that does not have its own government and is under a different country's rule. |
