| 13th Amendment | Abolishes slavery in all of the United States |
| Reconstruction | a plan to re-admit the south to the union under agreed upon conditions, while enforcing civil rights. |
| Freedman’s Bureau | Created by Congress to help poor whites and freed slaves. Assisted with: food, clothing, employment, education, protection against Ku Klux Klan, reuniting families separated during slavery |
| Sharecropper | a tenant farmer who cultivates farmland and gives a part of each crop as rent to the farm owner |
| Radical | representing or supporting an extreme or progressive section of a political party |
| Black Codes | Laws that limited the rights of black people after slavery was abolished |
| Impeach | the process of bringing charges against a government official for wrongdoing |
| 14th Amendment | Granted citizenship to all persons born in the United States and guaranteed all citizens “equal protection of the laws.” |
| 15th Amendment | This amendment sought to protect the voting rights of Black men after the Civil War, guaranteed the right to vote to all males regardless or race |
