What happened between the years 1784 - 1786 in the US? U.S. suffering from post war depression
What effort did they give around this time? Why did the effort fail? 1) Give Congress power to pass tariffs 2) RI refused do it failed
What are tariffs? a customs duty or tax levied on imports of merchandise goods
What did depression and unfavorable balance push? pushed to print money and pass debt relief measures
How did we deal with cash shortage before the war? - Declaring various staple prodcuts to be a legal tender - Deliberately overvaluing foreign coins to discourage their export - Making it illegal to ship coins abroad - Printing paper money
After the war what did some states try to do? tried to restore credit by imposing heavy taxes and severely restricting new issue of money
what happened in 1785-1786? a majority of the states printed more money
what states were successful in printing more money? Unsuccessful? 1) South Carolina New York Pennsylvania 2) Rhode Island
What happened in the summer of 1786? mobs in western communities stopped foreclosures by preventing courts from operating
What did well-to-do Americans see Daniel Shay's Rebellion as? "Liberty Gone Mad"
What happened to Shay and the rebels at the end of the rebellion? State government sent troops who defeated the rebels and Shay escaped to Vermont
What states share the Potomac river? Maryland and Virginia
What does Maryland send to all of the states? Maryland sends an invitation to all of the states to meet in Annapolis and talk about the Confederation
What was the Annapolis Convention? It was when most of the states met up to fix the Articles of Confederation?
When did the Constitutional Convention open in Philadelphia ? May 25, 1787
What did they end up doing to the Articles of Confederation? They ended up getting rid of the Articles of Confederation and shifted to a Federal System
What is the difference between Democracy and a republic? - Democracy - the people votes for everything - Republic - the people choose someone to represent and chose the decisions for them
What are the 3 branches of the government - Legislative - Executive - Judicial
What was the Virginia Plan and who's idea was it? 1. James Madison 2. State’s vote in Congress based on population
What was the New Jersey Plan and who's idea was it? 1. William Patterson 2. Each state has equal vote in Congress
What was the Connecticut Plan and who's idea was it? 1. Roger Sherman 2. Congress would have two houses
What were the two houses? and what did they do? 1) Lower House: House of Representatives - state’s vote based on population 2) Upper House: Senate - Each state gets an equal votes
What did the south and the north believe with the counting of the slaves? South: Slaves count, but not taxes North: Slaves don't count, but do in taxes
What was the Three Fifths Compromise? It was when a slave was equal to ⅗ of a free person for both representation and taxation
