The Constitution

| Constitution | Document that outlines the US system of government |
| Bicameral | Two Houses; the Congress is made of the House of Representatives and the Senate; the Congress is bicameral (made of two houses) |
| Preamble | introduction to the US Constitution. It's opening, "We the People" demonstrates self-government |
| Legislative Branch | Part of government that makes laws |
| Executive Branch | Part of government that enforces or carries out laws |
| Judicial Branch | Part of the government that interprets laws |
| Amendment | additions or changes to the Constitution |
| Legislature | A group of people who have the power to make laws |
| Legislate | To make laws |
| Federalism | The idea that power is shared between the federal and state governments, but if federal and state laws ever conflict, federal laws are always superior |
| Bill of Rights | Amendments 1-10 of the Constitution, added to make Anti-Federalists ratify the Constitution |
| Elastic Clause | Clause of the Constitution that says Congress can make any law that is "necessary and proper" |
| Representatives | Are leaders who represent the people of a nation or group. |
| House of Representatives | One of the two parts of Congress, considered the "lower house." Number of representatives for each state is determined by the state's population. (proportional representation) |
| Senate | One of the two parts of Congress, considered the "upper house." Each state has two. (equal representation) |
