The Constitution

TermDefinition
Constitution Document that outlines the US system of government
Bicameral Two Houses; the Congress is made of the House of Representatives and the Senate; the Congress is bicameral (made of two houses)
Preamble introduction to the US Constitution. It's opening, "We the People" demonstrates self-government
Legislative Branch Part of government that makes laws
Executive Branch Part of government that enforces or carries out laws
Judicial Branch Part of the government that interprets laws
Amendment additions or changes to the Constitution
Legislature A group of people who have the power to make laws
Legislate To make laws
Federalism The idea that power is shared between the federal and state governments, but if federal and state laws ever conflict, federal laws are always superior
Bill of Rights Amendments 1-10 of the Constitution, added to make Anti-Federalists ratify the Constitution
Elastic Clause Clause of the Constitution that says Congress can make any law that is "necessary and proper"
Representatives Are leaders who represent the people of a nation or group.
House of Representatives One of the two parts of Congress, considered the "lower house." Number of representatives for each state is determined by the state's population. (proportional representation)
Senate One of the two parts of Congress, considered the "upper house." Each state has two. (equal representation)
