The American Revolution

Second Continental Congress A meeting held in Philadelphia in 1775 attended by delegates from the colonies to decide how to respond to the fighting at Lexington.
Patriots American colonists who fought for independence against the British during the Revolutionary War.
Loyalists American colonists who sided with the British during the Revolutionary War.
Minutemen American colonial militia members who were ready to fight at a minute's notice.
Redcoats British soldiers who fought against the colonists in the American Revolution.
Continental Army The army created by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 to defend the American Colonies from the British.
Common Sense A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1776 that criticized monarchies and convinced many colonists of the need to break away from Great Britain.
Declaration of Independence The document written in 1776 by Thomas Jefferson to declare the colonies free from British rule.
Treaty of Paris of 1783 A peace agreement that officially ended the American Revolution and formally recognized the United States of America as an independent nation.
