squatter someone who settles on public land under government regulation with the hopes of acquiring the title to the land

secession withdrawal from the Union
popular sovereignty the idea that people living in a territory had the right to decide by voting if slavery would be allowed there
transcontinental railroad a railway system extending across the continent
referendum the practice of letting voters accept or reject measures proposed by the legislature
martial law the law administered by military forces that is invoked by a government in an emergency
greenback a piece of US paper money first issued by the North during the Civil War
conscription requiring people to enter military service
habeas corpus a legal order for an inquiry to determine whether a person has been lawfully imprisoned
attrition the act of wearing down by constant harassment or attack
blockade runners ship that runs through a blockade, usually to smuggle goods through a protected area

siege a military blockade of a city or fortified place to force it to surrender
