What was the first legal code? Hammurabi's Code
Where and when was Hammurabi's code created? In 1754 BC in ancient Babylon- modern day Iraq
What is a Statutory Law? A law passed by law-making bodies (federal and state legislatures)
What is Common Law/Court Decisions? Laws that are determined harmful by society- often considered common sense
What is Precedence? Means a previous case or legal decision can be used as an example in future cases that are similar
What is Administrative Law? Laws made by government agencies- or hired people in government that made regulations
What is a Constitutional Law? A law that applies to the country's constitution (stated in the constitution)
Military Law Crimes relating to people in the US military
What is Court Martial? Military court process
What is a military lawyer called? Judge Advocate General (JAG)
Juvenile Law Crimes relating to people under the age of 18
Emancipation Being legally considered an adult
Tort Law An act that causes harm to another person or property
Compensation To be made whole again
Family Law Deals with issues such as divorce and/or custody
Contract Law Deals with legality of contracts and disputes
What is Consideration? The purpose of the agreement (the action)
Property Law Mostly deals with Real Estate- land and property
What is Real Property? Real estate but also any rights, mineral, easement, etc
Notary Public The government's witness
Maritime Law Deals with issues and conflicts relating to water and navigation
Corporate Law Deals with corporate matters, business dealings
What is a Corporation? A business that has specific legal protections and responsibilities
Intellectual Property Law Deals with trademarks- ideas that are protected by law
Environmental Law Issues related to resource use and protection of the earth
Martial Law When military government takes control during an emergency
Probate Law Deals with the process of handling a deceased person's estate
Civil Law Deals with disputes between individuals or organizations
Criminal Law Laws relating to crime and punishment
What is the Supreme Court's job? Interprets the Constitution
How many members are in the Supreme Court? 9 members, not by law, but tradition
How many times does the Supreme Court meet? About 9 months each year, each term begins the first Monday in October and runs as long as the business before the court requires- special sessions may be called to deal with matters that cannot wait
