colony an area of settlement in one place that is controlled by a country in another location
indentured servant a person who contracted his or her labor for paid passage to the colony plus food and shelter for the period of service

chattel slavery type of slavery that defined enslaved people as the personal property of their owners
manumission a process in which an owner voluntarily freed an enslaved person.
emancipation the process of freeing enslaved people through government action
freedom papers free black people in many colonies carried a legal certificate of freedom
delegate a person chosen to act for or speak for others
representative a person chosen to act for or speak for others
representation having a voice in government through officials who are elected to speak or act on your behalf
