QuestionAnswer
Urbanization The build up and movement of people from rural areas to city centers.
Industrialization The development of industries in a country or region on a wide scale.
Progressive Era A period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United States.
Tenements A large building divided into apartments, usually in a poor area of a city, or one of the apartments: These buildings were overcrowded, prone to disease, fire, crime, and had high child mortality rates.
Jacob Riis A social reformer that brought attention to the conditions of tenement living by giving lectures and writing a book titled “How the Other Half Lives”
Child Labor The use of children in industry or business, especially when illegal or considered inhumane
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory A fire broke out on the 8th floor and the doors had been locked to keep the workers inside. Most workers were young immigrant women. 146 workers died or jumped to their death.
Muckrakers Reform-minded journalists, writers, and photographers in the Progressive Era who claimed to expose corruption and wrongdoing in established institutions, often through sensationalist publications.
Jane Addams Founder of Hull-House, a place where immigrants could find companionship and support and the assistance they needed for coping with the modern city.
Booker T. Washington An influential African-American that founded the Tuskegee Institute, created the National Negro Business League, and served as an adviser to two Presidents.
Consumer Boom During the 1920's, people began to spend lots of money on things that they hoped would improve their lives, like cars, telephones, radios and refrigerators.
Credit Industry The idea was that if someone needed to buy something that they didn’t have the money for, they could put down a small deposit and then pay the rest off over time. Many ordinary people could afford to buy things that had previously been out of their reach.
Henry Ford Created the use of the assembly to "mass produce"cars allowing him build cars quickly and cheaply.
New Deal A group of U.S. government programs of the 1930s by President Franklin D. Roosevelt started to help the country recover from the economic problems of the Great Depression.
Great Depression A time period of harsh economic times after the stock market crash that caused hardships for many Americans. The unemployment rate rose to 25% at its highest level.
The Harlem Renaissance A celebration of African-American culture in the 1920s and 1930s which has had a major influence on African-American literature, philosophy and music.
Stock Market Crash Occured on October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday when panic set in and investors began selling their shares at an alarming rate causing the shares on the market became worthless.
