| ghettos | Ethnic neighborhoods where people of the same race, religion, or country, lived. |
| tenement housing | Multi-family apartment housing, usually occupied by immigrant families. |
| nativism | The belief that native-born Americans are superior to foreigners. |
| steerage | The bottom part of a steamship; many lower-class immigrants could only afford these cheaper tickets. |
| Ellis Island | The east-coast immigration station in NYC, where many European immigrants entered America. |
| Angel Island | The west-coast immigration station in San Francisco; where many Asian immigrants entered America. |
