Immigration Vocab

QuestionAnswer
immigrate The action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country.
emigrate The act of leaving one’s own country to settle permanently in another country.
pull factor Reasons to want to move into a new country.
push factor Reasons to want to leave one’s own country.
ghettos Ethnic neighborhoods where people of the same race, religion, or country, lived.
tenement housing Multi-family apartment housing, usually occupied by immigrant families.
nativism The belief that native-born Americans are superior to foreigners.
steerage The bottom part of a steamship; many lower-class immigrants could only afford these cheaper tickets.
Ellis Island The east-coast immigration station in NYC, where many European immigrants entered America.
Angel Island The west-coast immigration station in San Francisco; where many Asian immigrants entered America.
