Embargo Act | Law passed by Thomas Jefferson that banned trade with foreign nations, it was a disaster and made Jefferson very unpopular. |
Lewis and Clark | Explored the Louisiana Territory to find a Northwest Passage, make peaceful contact with the natives and document the plant and animals life of the area. |
Louisiana Purchase | The land bought from France in 1803 that went from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. |
Missouri River | Route that Lewis and Clark followed as they explored the Louisiana territory. |
Sacagawea | Native guide that assisted Lewis and Clark by acting as an interpreter. |
Impressment | Forcing sailors to serve in another country's navy against their will. |
Tecumseh | Native American leader that dreamed of a confederacy of tribes to stop US expansion westward. |
Tippecanoe | Battle fought between William Henry Harrison and Tecumseh's forces that ended Tecumseh's dream of native confederacy, fought near Prophetstown. |
William Henry Harrison | War of 1812 general that became a hero for defeating Tecumseh at Tippecanoe and the Battle of Thames. |
Thomas Jefferson | President that doubled the size of the US. |
Treaty of Ghent | Agreement that officially ended the war of 1812, nothing was gained by the Americans or British. |
War of 1812 | Fought because Americans were tired of British impressment and Congressman wanted land in Canada. |
Fort McHenry | American victory at Baltimore; the Star Spangled Banner was written as a result of this battle. |
Thames River | Battle in which William Henry Harrison defeated Tecumseh for the last time; fought in Canada after the battle of Lake Erie. |
Horseshoe Bend | Battle fought in Alabama when Andrew Jackson defeated the Creek Nation secured millions of acres of Creek land for American settlement. |

Era of Good Feelings | Time period following the War of 1812 in which there was only one political party and a feeling of unity and nationalism in America. |
James Monroe | 5th President of the US during the Era of Good Feelings. |
Monroe Doctrine | Speech to Europe that said the western hemisphere was off limits to colonization, the US would protect Latin America. |
Latin America | South, Central and parts of North America claimed by either Spain or Portugal. |
