Embargo Act | law passed by Thomas Jefferson that banned trade with all foreign nations, it was a disaster and made Jefferson very unpopular |
Lewis and Clark | Explored the Louisiana Territory to find a northwest passage, make peaceful contact with natives and document the plant and animal life of the area |
Louisiana Purchase | the land bought from France in 1803 that went from the Mississippi river to the Rocky Mountains |
Missouri River | route that guided Lewis and Clark followed as they explored the Louisiana Territory |
Sacagawea | native guide that assisted Lewis and Clark by acting as an interpreter |
Impressment | forcing sailors to serve in another country's navy against their will |
Tecumseh | Native American leader that dreamed of a confederacy of tribes to stop US expansion westward |
Tippecanoe | battle fought between William Henry Harrison and Tecumseh's forces that ended Tecumseh's dream of native confederacy, fought near Prophetstown |

Treaty of Ghent | Agreement that officially ended the War of 1812, nothing was gained by the Americans or British |
War of 1812 | Fought because Americans were tired of British impressment and Congressmen wanted land in Canada |

Thames River | battle in which William Henry Harrison defeated Tecumseh for the last time; fought in Canada after the Battle of Lake Erie |
Horseshoe Bend | Battle fought in Alabama when Andrew Jackson defeated the Creek nation; secured millions of acres for Creek land for American settlement |

Era of Good Feelings | Time period following the War of 1812 in which there was only one political party and a feeling of unity and nationalism in America |

Monroe Doctrine | Speech to Europe that said the western hemisphere was off limits to colonization, the US would protect Latin America |
