disagreement - phil

Dr. harker

TermDefinition
disagreement factor - factor leads people to divergent yet reasonable answers to a single question
suspension of judgement - realization of disagreement does give you good but NOT conclusive reason to think your belief was false - significant evidence both for and against OR no significant evidence for or against
higher-order evidence - evidence that is there is evidence for a certain belief - evidence that you screw up in some way in coming to your belief ( missing evidence )
example of when to defer to others - based on what you were taught in elementary, you believe pluto was a full-size planet - in today's age, astronomers found pluto to be a dwarf planet - you should defer to astronomers' claims
example of when to NOT defer to others - Haley started listening to Morgan Wallen. She claims he is outstanding. She states he has 11 studio albums. - you should not defer with Haley's claims
reasons why appealing to experts is challenging - fellow experts may disagree ( astronomers = experts in astrology ) - difficulty figuring out who the expert is ( ex. expert = god )
stick to your guns - disbelieve others beliefs and to stick to your own belief ( disbelief )
split the difference - you and your peers beliefs are seen as equal reasoning - different comparison class
illusory disagreement example - Jen argues Nate is short. Sam argues he is not short. - different comparison class
epistemic peer - roughly equal on all disagreement factors - equally likely to answer correctly - equal knowledge or expertise
epistemic inferior - not surpass others in disagreement factors - more likely to answer correctly - lesser understanding or knowledge
epistemic superior - surpass others in disagreement factors - more likely to answer correctly - higher level of knowledge and expertise
belief - adopting the other person's belief - accepting a proposition as true or likely - realization of disagreement does give good reason to change your view
disbelief - sticking with your old belief - denial of proposition as false of unlikely - stick to your guns - realization of disagreement does NOT give good reason to change your view
illusory disagreement - no genuine disagreement exists
