charter | noun | an official document given by a government or ruler to a business or other group. The charter explains the group's rights and responsibilities. |
joint-stock company | noun | a company organized like a corporation except that stockholders are liable for debts. |
headright | noun | a right belonging to member of an American Indian tribe to receive a per-capita share in the distribution of income earned by the tribal trust fund (as from the sale or lease of mineral rights) or a share of the fund on its termination |
burgess | noun | a citizen who lives in an English borough. |
investigate | verb | to look into carefully and closely so as to learn the facts; examine. |
expand | verb | to make larger or wider. |
dissent | verb | to disagree with an opinion or belief held by many others. |
persecute | verb | to continually treat in a cruel or harsh way because of race, religion, political ideas, or some other difference. |
tolerance | noun | willingness to accept people whose race, religion, opinions, or habits are different from one's own. |
enforce | verb | to put in force; make people obey. |
policy | noun | a written contract that contains the terms of an agreement between an insurance company and the person being insured. |
patroon | noun | under the original Dutch governments of New York and New Jersey, one who was given the proprietorship of a large tract of land, along with certain privileges of use. |
pacifists | noun | one who opposes war and refuses to practice or acknowledge violence as a way of settling disputes or resisting aggression. |
ethnic | adjective | of or relating to a group of people who share the same culture, race, or nationality. |
function | noun | the purpose or role that an object or a person fulfills or is suited for. |
indentured servant | noun | a person who is bound to work without pay in the service of another for a specified length of time, esp. in exchange for the cost of travel, food, and lodging. |
constitution | noun | the set of basic laws by which a nation, state, or other organization is governed. |
debtor | noun | a person who owes a debt to another. |
estate | noun | a piece of land with a large house on it. |
dominate | verb | to control by the use of power; rule. |
