unemployment the state of not having a job
drought a long period of dry weather with little or no rain
tariff a tax that is placed on goods brought into one country from another
depression a long period in which a country's economy is not doing well and many people are without jobs
dam a barrier that blocks the flow of water
stock a share in the ownership and profits of a company
civilian a person not in the armed services or the police force
shantytown an area of makeshift dwellings inhabited by poor or homeless people
debt something that is owed, typically money
