| State | A politically bound area controlled by an established government |
| Terms for a location to be considered a state | -defined territory with borders -permanent population -sovereignty -recognition from other states |
| sovereignty | the right of a government to control and defend its territory and determine what happens within its borders |
| nation | a group of people with a common cultural identity through shared cultural traits |
| nation-state | when the borders of a nation matches the border of a state ex. Japan, Denmark, Iceland |
| stateless nation | a nation of people without a state to occupy ex. the Kurds in SW Asia |
| multistate nation | a nation of people that live in more than one state ex. North and South Korea |
| multinational state | a state with various nations within its borders ex. United States, Russia |
| autonomous region | self governing within a larger political or organizational entity |
| semi-autonomous region | largely self-governing within a larger political or organizational entity |
