State A politically bound area controlled by an established government
Terms for a location to be considered a state -defined territory with borders -permanent population -sovereignty -recognition from other states
sovereignty the right of a government to control and defend its territory and determine what happens within its borders
nation a group of people with a common cultural identity through shared cultural traits
nation-state when the borders of a nation matches the border of a state ex. Japan, Denmark, Iceland
stateless nation a nation of people without a state to occupy ex. the Kurds in SW Asia
multistate nation a nation of people that live in more than one state ex. North and South Korea
multinational state a state with various nations within its borders ex. United States, Russia
autonomous region self governing within a larger political or organizational entity
semi-autonomous region largely self-governing within a larger political or organizational entity
