Term | Definition |

Peninsula | a mass of land that projects out and is surrounded by water on three sides. |
Oracle | a shrine where a prophecy (prediction) is revealed through priest. Also refers to a priest or priestess who could speak with the gods. |
Hellenistic | the period of expansion of Greek culture and history following Alexanders death until the rise of the Roman Empire in 31 BCE. |
Polis | Usually led by aristocrats and military rulers. The city-state was the center of Greek life. |
Democracy | eventually some citizens came up with the idea to form a type of government, where citizens govern themselves. |
Tyrant | an all powerful, cruel ruler |
Triumvirate | a government by three people with equal power; from TRI (three) and Virate (of men) |
Persecution | to attack, imprison, or harass a person because of their belief. |
Inflation | an increase in price of goods and a fall in value of money |
Plague | a deadly contagious disease |
