| Term | Definition |

| Implied powers | Authority not specifically mentioned in the constitution but suggested in it’s language |
| Judicial review | Power of the supreme court to say whether any federal, state, or local law or government action goes against the Constitution. |
| Due process | The legal rules and procedures established by law and guaranteed by the constitution that the government must observe before depriving a person of life, liberty, or property. |
| Popular Sovereignty | The belief that government is subject to the will of the people. |
| Limited Government | Idea that a government may only use the powers given to it by the people. |
| Enumerated Power | Power specifically given to congress in the Constitution. |
| Reserved Power | Authority belonging only to the states |
| Concurrent power | Powers of a state that are shared to the federal and state powers |
| Separation of powers | Separating powers into branches so that a branch cannot function as another. |
| Equal protection | The equal application of the law regardless of a person’s race, religion, political beliefs, or other equalities. |
| Naturalization | The process of becoming a citizen of another country. |
| Amendment #1 | Congress make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting it’s free exercise. It protects freedom of speech, the press, assembly, and the right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. |
| Amendment #2 | Protects the individual right to possess firearms for lawful purposes such as self defense. |
| Amendment #3 | Prohibits the housing of a solider who doesn’t want to be housed. |
| Amendment #4 | Protects people from unreasonable searches held by the government. |
| Bill of Rights | The first 10 amendments to the US constitution |
| Preamble (important words from the Preamble) | In order to make America “more perfect” for it’s citizens, the Constitution attempts to establish laws pertaining to justice, peace, defense, welfare, liberty and prosperity. |
| Balances of Power | An instance of circumstances when the power of nations is distributed equally. |
