Wounded Knee, South Dakota 1969 *200 members of AIM seized wounded knee for 70 days. attempted to dramatize indian suffering and called for preferential hiring and gov. reimbursements for lands taken by whites.
Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty I 1972 *SALT I- signed while nixon was pres. limited production of ICBMs and other strategic weapons systems.

War Powers Act 1973 *passed over nixon's veto. restricted powers of the president in tonkin gulf resolution. the pres could only commit american troops for 60 days without approval of congress.
Yom Kippur War 1973 *egyptian troops attacked israel on a jewish holiday. resulted in a stalemate and a UN cease-fire agreement. after the war, the OPEC began an oil embargo against the u.s. b/c of u.s. aid to israelis during war
Oil Embargo 1973 *OPEC stopped the sale of oil to america b/c of its support of israel during the yom kippur war. a fuel crisis in the u.s. resulted from this.
Warren Burger conservative chief justice of supreme court apppointed by nixon after liberal earl warren stepped down. had a strong law and order record.
Watergate 1973 *scandal that resulted from a burglary at democratic national headquarters an watergate hotel. the burglars were hired by CREEP to ruin opponents' records and spy on them. nixon attempted to cover up the burglary.
Gerald Ford he was the speaker of the house who became vp when spiro t. agnew, nixon's first vp, resigned b/c he was accused of aking bribes. when pres nixon resigned ford became the first non-elected president
Stagflation term used to describe the economy during nixon's presidency b/c business was stagnated and inflation was rising uncontrollably
Jimmy Carter gov of georgia. his lack of experience hampered his ability to get the necessary support from congress to pass his programs. high unemployment and double-digit inflation were blamed on him. defeated for a second term by ronald reagan
Panama Canal Treaty 1978 *gave the panama canal back to panama on dec. 31, 1999. it will remain under panamanian control as long as ships from any country may use the canal
Camp David Accord 1978 *presidential retreat at camp david, virginia. anwar sadat (egypt) and menachem begin (israel) agreed to a peace settlement. israel would leave egyptian territory if egypt recognized israel as a sovereign nation
SALT II 1979 *limited rocket launchers, controlled the size of new missiles, but required no change in the existing arsenals. negotiations to l imit the nuclear arms race continued. it was not passe by congress, but carter still honored it.
Invasion of Afghanistan 1979 *on dec. 27, the red army blitzed across afghanistan, renewing u.s. fears of soviet expansion. carter condemned this action by boycotting the 1980 olympics in moscow and embargoing grain to russia
Olympic Boycott 1980 *this was a u.s. reaction to the soviet invasion of afghanistan
Iranian Hostage Crisis 1979-80 **muslim fundamentalists raided the u .s. embassy in tehran, capturing 52 u.s. hostages. carter unsuccessfuly tried to negotiate their release. they were released 444 days later when ronald reagan was elected pres.
Ayatollah Khoumeni head of muslims in iran. came to power after he overthrew the shah. fundamentalist religious leader who led revolutionary guard in tarrorist acts against shah's supporters. denounced the u.s. as enemy of islam. instigated the iranian hostage crisis.

Nicaragua underwent a revolution where the long-reigning somoza family was overthrown by leftist daniel ortega and the sandinistas. reagan supported the contras, a guerilla group based in el salvador that opposed the sandinistas.
