John Peter Zenger New York printer who was taken to court for criticizing the governor of New York
William Cosby Royal Governor of New York who had printer John Peter Zenger arrested for seditious libel
Francis Harison Cosby's "fixer" who made sure newspapers only published favorable things about the governor
Rip Van Dam was acting governor before Cosby arrived in New York and was a highly respected member of the council
Chief Justice Lewis Morris was the only dissenting vote against the creation of Cosby's new court. He embarrassed Cosby by publishing a pamphlet about his reasoning, rather than privately responding to Cosby in a letter. Cosby then fired him
