Columbian Exchange The exchange of goods, ideas and diseases between the New World (Americans) and Europe/Africa/Asia Positive Impacts: New foods and resources shared improved nutrition Negative Impacts: Spread diseases to the New World
Colony A place where a country sent settlers to control that land and resources Ex: England sent people over to America and created colonies that England controlled
Indentured Servant A person who agrees to work to pay off a debt in return for the cost of the trip to the colonies They have a contract, learn a skills, were punished harshly for their mistakes, and were free when their contract ended
Cash Crops Crops that are grown on plantations in the Southern Colonies -Worth a lot of money Ex: Tobacco, cotton, rice, indigo
Representative Democracy A government where the people have power to participate/make decisions and can vote to elect the leaders that represent them
Mayflower Compact An agreement of the Pilgrims in the Plymouth colony on how to establish laws and make decisions for the colony (This was a basis for a democratic government)
Virginia House of Burgesses The government created in the Southern Colonies → representatives from each colony in the region were elected to make decisions for the group (This is the basis of a representative democracy)
Triangle Trade The trade route between the New World, Europe, and Africa
Middle Passage The journey enslaved people were forced to take from Africa to the New World A part of the Triangle Trade
