The American Colonies

TermDefinition
Jamestown The first colony in the United States which was set up in 1607 along the James River in Virginia.
Indentured Servants A colonist who received free passage to North America in exchange for working without pay for a certain number of years.
Slave Codes Laws passed in the colonies to control slaves.
Puritans Protestants who protested certain practices of the Catholic Church.
Immigrants A person who moves to another country after leaving their homeland.
Mayflower Compact A document written in 1620 by the Pilgrims which established a political society and set up guidelines for self-government.
Quakers A Protestant sect which was founded in 1640 in England and whose members believed salvation was available to all people.
Staple Crops A crop that is continuously in demand.
Triangular Trade Trading networks in which goods and slaves moved among Europe, Africa and the American Colonies
Great Awakening A religious movement that became widespread in the American Colonies during the 1730s and 1740s.
