The American Colonies

| Jamestown | The first colony in the United States which was set up in 1607 along the James River in Virginia. |
| Indentured Servants | A colonist who received free passage to North America in exchange for working without pay for a certain number of years. |
| Slave Codes | Laws passed in the colonies to control slaves. |
| Puritans | Protestants who protested certain practices of the Catholic Church. |
| Immigrants | A person who moves to another country after leaving their homeland. |
| Mayflower Compact | A document written in 1620 by the Pilgrims which established a political society and set up guidelines for self-government. |
| Quakers | A Protestant sect which was founded in 1640 in England and whose members believed salvation was available to all people. |
| Staple Crops | A crop that is continuously in demand. |
| Triangular Trade | Trading networks in which goods and slaves moved among Europe, Africa and the American Colonies |
| Great Awakening | A religious movement that became widespread in the American Colonies during the 1730s and 1740s. |
