Constitution | the laws and plans of a nation's government |
COnvention | a large gathering of people for a particular reason |
Compromise | a settling of differences where both sides give up something |
Legislative Branch | the part of government that makes laws |
Executive Branch | the part of government that carries out laws |
Judicial Branch | the part of government that settles differences about the meanings of laws |
Ratify | to approve or accept something |
Amendment | a change or addition to a document |
Delegate | a person who represents other people at a meeting |
Arsenal | a place where weapons and military equipment are stored |
Separation of Powers | power is divided between three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial |
Veto | power of the President to reject a bill passed by Congress |
Checks and Balances | system in which the powers of the government between the three branches, each branch can "check" or limit the power of other branches |
Levels of Government | local, state, and federal (national) |
Republic | government where people elect representatives to make laws on behalf |
Federalism | a division of power between the federal and state governments |
Founders | delegates responsible for creating the Constitution at the Constitutional Convention |
Enforce | to carry out effectively |
Reluctant | not willing to do something, and therefore slow to do it |
Impeachment | to charge a public official with a crime or misconduct |
Executive order | a rule or order made by the President that has much of the same power as a federal law |
Grievance | a feeling of having been treated unfairly |
Dictator | a ruler who has total control over a country, typically by force |
Popular Sovereignty | idea that people should have a government of their choosing |
Population | the total number of people living in a particular area |
Alliance | a formal agreement between two or more countries for support in case of war |
Disputes | A disagreement, argument, or debate |
Overrides | when the Legislative Branch votes to pass a bill into law despite the president's veto |
Pardon | a government decision that grants forgiveness to a convicted criminal |
