ROANOKE- First English colony in the Americas (Near North Carolina)
MERCANTILISM- Countries take natural resources from a colony then sell the same object for more money
JAMESTOWN- First permanent English settlement in North America. Had to suffer disease, starvation, and no clean water (In Virginia)
JOHN SMITH- Brought order to Jamestown
POCAHONTAS- Married colonist John Rolfe which made the Native Americans be friendly with the English
TOBACCO- How did it help Jamestown?- Tobacco was a cash crop the colony could grow. It helped Jamestown by bringing more wealth over them and more settlers
HOUSE OF BURGESSES- First elective assembly in the colonies which had authority to pass local laws and raise taxes
MAYFLOWER COMPACT- An agreement that established the practice of self government
PILGRIMS- People who traveled for religious freedom
PURITANS- Wanted to purify Church of England
QUAKERS- Group of people that thought that Puritan ministers were interfering with getting to God. Thought women could be ministers
HOW DID THE PURITANS PERSECUTE THE QUAKERS?- The Puritans persecuted the Quakers by jailing, banishing, and whipping them.
NEW ENGLAND WAY- Puritans set up self-governing congregation that each had their own minister who set up the town. The Puritans believed of Hard work, education, and representative government
WHAT 2 THINGS ARE THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES KNOWN FOR?- Representative government and religious freedom
SQUANTO- Native American who helped the Pilgrims survive by teaching them how to plant crops
ROGER WILLIAMS- Founded Rhode Island
FUNDAMENTAL ORDERS OF CONNECTICUT- A document that extended voting rights for non-church members which expanded representative government
LORD BALTIMORE- Founded Maryland
ACT OF TOLERATION- Maryland law that forbade religious persecution
JAMES OGLETHORPE- Founder of Georgia
WHY DID SLAVERY BEGIN IN THE SOUTHERN COLONIES?- The southern colonies had large plantations that required many people to harvest
WHAT WERE SOME CROPS GROWN IN THE SOUTHERN COLONIES?- Tobacco, rice, indigo, and cotton
WHAT WERE THE SOUTHERN COLONIES KNOWN FOR- Slavery, plantations and cash crops
WILLIAM PENN- Founder of Pennsylvania
WHO FOUNDED NEW JERSEY?- Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkeley
WHAT WERE THE MIDDLE COLONIES KNOWN FOR?- Shipping, farming and trade
