Patriots Colonists who wanted independence from Britain
Loyalists American colonists who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence
Lexington and Concord The first battles of the Revolutionary war. Shot Heard around the world
Militia A group of civilians trained to fight
Minutemen Member of a militia during the American Revolution who could be ready to fight very quickly
Red Coats Nickname for British soldiers
Common Sense A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine that argued for independence from Great Britain
King George III King of England during the American Revolution
Continental Congress The legislative assembly composed of delegates from the rebel colonies who met during and after the American Revolution
Natural Rights The idea that all humans are born with rights, which include the right to life, liberty, and property (or pursuit of happiness)
Declaration of Independence Document that declared American independence from Britain
Continental Army The American army during the American Revolution
Guerilla Warfare A hit-and-run technique used in fighting a war; fighting by small bands of warriors using tactics such as sudden ambushes
Battle of Saratoga American victory over British troops in 1777 that was a turning point in the American Revolution.
Battle of Yorktown 1781 American victory in Virginia that forced the British to surrender
Treaty of Paris (1783) This treaty ended the Revolutionary War and recognized the independence of the American colonies.
