French and Indian War | (1754-1763) War fought in the colonies between the English and the French for control of the Ohio Valley area. The English won. |
Parliament | the lawmaking body of British government |
National Debt | The amount of money a national government owes to other governments or its people |
Taxes | Required payments to a government |
Tariff | A tax paid on items imported from another country |
Proclamation of 1763 | Law forbidding colonists in the 13 Colonies from moving or settling west of the Appalachian Mountains |
Albany Plan of Union | Plan proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1754 that aimed to unite the 13 colonies for trade, military, and other purposes; the plan was turned down by the colonies and the King of England |
Stamp Act | 1765; law that taxed printed goods, including: playing cards, documents, newspapers, etc. |
Stamp Act Congress | Group of colonists who protested the Stamp Act, saying that Parliament couldn't tax without colonist consent |
Writs of Assistance | Search warrants used to search homes, businesses, ships, and person for smuggled items |
Smuggling | The act of illegally importing or exporting goods |
Tea Act | Law passed by parliament allowing the British East India Company to sell its low-cost tea directly to the colonies - undermining colonial tea merchants; led to the Boston Tea Party |
Boston Tea Party | A 1773 protest against British taxes in which Boston colonists disguised as Mohawk Native Americans dumped valuable tea into Boston Harbor. |
Intolerable Acts | Series of laws passed in 1774 to punish Boston for the Tea Party |
Boston Port Act | Closed Boston Harbor until damages were paid and order could be ensured (One of the Intolerable Acts) |
Massachusetts Government Act | Act which reduced the power of the Massachusetts legislature while increasing the power of the royal governor (One of the Intolerable Acts) |
Administration of Justice Act | Act which allowed royal officials accused of crimes in the colonies to be tried in England instead of the colonies (One of the Intolerable Acts) |
Quartering Act | An act passed by the British that allowed British troops to live in the homes of the colonists (One of the Intolerable Acts. There was also an earlier Quartering Act passed in 1765) |
No taxation without representation | Slogan that the colonists' believed that they should not be taxed because they had no direct representatives in Parliament |
Olive Branch Petition | An offer of peace sent by the Second Continental Congress to King George lll. King George refused this offer. |
Continental Congress | The legislative assembly composed of delegates from the rebel colonies who met during and after the American Revolution |
