Colonial America
| Term | Definition |

| Roanoke | First attempted English settlement in the New World. All settlers mysteriously disappeared. No one knows where they went. Often called the "Lost Colony." |
| Jamestown | The first permanent English settlement in North America in what is now Virginia. |
| House of Burgesses | 1619 - The Virginia House of Burgesses formed, the first lawmaking group in colonial America. Later other colonies would adopt houses of burgesses. |
| Plymouth | Colony settled by the Pilgrims. It eventually merged with Massachusetts Bay colony. |
| Pilgrims | English Puritans who founded Plymouth colony in 1620 |
| Puritans | A religious group who wanted to purify the Church of England. They came to America for religious freedom and settled Massachusetts Bay. |
| Religious Freedom | the right to choose and practice a religion without interference by the government |
| Mayflower Compact | 1620 - The first agreement for self-government in America. It was signed by the 41 men on the Mayflower and set up a government for the Plymouth colony. |
| 13 Colonies | British colonies located along the Atlantic Ocean in North America: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia |
| New England Colonies | The Northeast: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire |
| Middle Colonies | New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware |
| Southern Colonies | Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia |
| Triangular Trade | A three way system of trade during 1600-1800s -Africa sent slaves to America -America sent Raw Materials to Europe (such as cotton and sugar) -Europe sent Guns and Rum to Africa |
| Middle Passage | A voyage that brought enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America and the West Indies |
| Slavery | A system of forced labor and service in which some people are owned by other people. |
| Plantation | A large farm in the southern colonies/states often worked mostly by slaves |
| Cash Crop | A plant grown that makes a lot of money when it is sold. Examples include cotton, tobacco, and sugar. Plantations were often dedicated to growing these. |
