Interstate Highway System Network of roads that connected the country created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Executive Order 9981 Desegregation of the military, done by President Harry Truman
Brown v. Board of Education 1954 Supreme Court case that ruled that segregation in schools is unconstitutional
Little Rock Nine Group of black students who integrated Little Rock Central High School, which was previously all white
Civil Rights Act of 1964 Made discrimination based on race, religion, sex, or national origin illegal
Voting Rights Act of 1965 Law that outlawed literacy tests to vote and helped protect African Americans right to vote
John F. Kennedy 35th President of the United States, Democrat, 1961 to 1963. Assassinated during his first term in 1963
Lyndon B. Johnson 36th President of the United States, Democrat, 1963 to 1969. Was Kennedy's vice president and became president when Kennedy was assassinated. Won his own election in 1964. Refused to run again in 1968 due to unpopularity of the Vietnam War.
Richard Nixon 37th President of the United States, Republican, 1969 to 1974. Resigned in 1974 following his involvement in the Watergate scandal.
Nuclear Test Ban Treaty 1963 treaty signed by U.S. and Soviet Union to ban testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere. Signed while John F. Kennedy was president
Bay of Pigs Invasion 1961 failed invasion of Cuba by a CIA-led force of Cuban exiles.
Great Society Policies and programs created by President Lyndon B. Johnson to fight poverty and racial injustice in the United States
Medicare Federal program that provides health insurance to elderly people (age 65 and older)
Medicaid Federal program that provides healthcare to low-income people
Ping Pong Diplomacy Term used for an improvement in the relationship between the U.S. and China during Nixon's presidency. Earned its name from table tennis games played between the two countries
Watergate Scandal where people broke into the Democratic National Committee's office to steal information about Nixon's opponents in the 1972 election. Nixon's attempts to cover it up led to his resignation in 1974
Draft Dodgers Americans who opposed the war and left the U.S. rather than fight. Many went to Canada during the Vietnam War
Conscientious Objector Person who refuses to enter the military due to moral or religious reasons
Counterculture A culture with lifestyles and values opposed to those of the established culture. Led to different styles of clothing, music, and social attitudes
Ronald Reagan 40th President of the United States, Republican, 1981 to 1989. Known for his strong anti-communist stance and economic policies to reduce government involvement
Reaganomics Economic policies of Ronald Reagan that focused on cutting taxes and reducing government spending
Supply Side Economics Economic idea that cutting taxes and regulations will lead to more economic activity. Also known as trickle down economics
