| Cold War | Period of intense rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union from 1945 to 1991 |
| Communism | Political and economic system where all property and resources are owned and controlled by the government, with no social classes. |
| United Nations | An international organization formed after WWII to promote international peace, security, and cooperation. |
| Arms Race | Competition between the U.S. and Soviet Union to build up their respective armed forces and weapons, especially nuclear weapons |
| Space Race | Competition between the United States and Soviet Union for dominance in outer space |
| Sputnik | First satellite in space, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957 |
| Containment | American policy of limiting the spread of communism |
| Truman Doctrine | President Truman's policy of providing military aid to any country threatened by communism |
| Marshall Plan | American plan to provide nations rebuilding after World War II with money to help them rebuild so they don't become communist |
| Berlin Airlift | Joint effort by the US and Britain to fly food and supplies into West Berlin after the Soviet blocked off all ground routes into the city |
| West Germany | British, American and French zone of Germany and was democratic. |
| East Germany | Portion of Germany that was communist and controlled by the Soviet Union |
| Berlin Wall | A wall separating East and West Berlin built by East Germany in 1961 to keep citizens from escaping to the West |
| Iron Curtain | A political barrier that isolated the peoples of Eastern Europe after WWII, restricting their ability to travel outside the region. Was a symbol, not a physical barrier. |
| Korean War (1950-1953) | Conflict between communist North Korea and democratic South Korea following North Korea's invasion of the south. United States got involved. Result was a stalemate. |
| Domino Theory | A theory that if one nation comes under Communist control, then neighboring nations will also come under Communist control. |
| Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) | Area on the border of North Korea and South Korea where no military forces are allowed |
| Vietnam War | A war between communist North Vietnam and US-backed South Vietnam |
| Viet Cong | Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam |
| Cuban Missile Crisis | The 1962 confrontation between US and the Soviet Union over Soviet missiles in Cuba. |
| McCarthyism | Practice of accusing Americans of being communists and disloyal, often without much evidence. Named after Senator Joseph McCarthy |
| House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) | A congressional committee created to search out disloyal Americans & Communists. |
| Espionage | Spying, especially to gain government secrets |
| Glasnost | A policy of the Soviet government creating a more open government for its people under Mikhail Gorbachev |
| Perestroika | Changes to economic polices in the Soviet Union that resulted in less control from the government over the economy under Mikhail Gorbachev |
