Where is Rome located? On the Italian peninsula in southeast Europe.
What is Rome's climate in the summer? Hot & Dry

What was very fertile throughout the peninsula and could support an expanding population? River Valleys & Plains

What mountain ran north to south of the peninsula? The Apennine Mountains
Why was it easy to unify? It didn't isolate the different groups of people.
Were the Apennine mountains easily crossed? Yes
Were the Apennine a barrier to unification? No
How many hills was Rome built on? 7 hills along the Tiber river.
What did the 7 hills do? They protected from sea invasion.
What did the Tiber river do? It connected Rome to the Mediterranean Sea.
What did Rome become? An important trade center.
What does the story of Romulus & Remus tell of? The founding of Rome.
When was Rome founded? 753 B.C.
Who were Romulus & Remus' parents? Mars & a daughter of a king.
What happened when Romulus and Remus were babies? They were threw into the Tiber river by their evil uncle.
Why did the uncle do that? To prevent them from becoming king.
Who were Romulus & Remus saved by? A she-wolf rescued them.
Who raised Romulus & Remus? A shepherd and his wife.
What happened when they were older? They were planning to build a city along the Tiber river but couldn't decide a site.
What did Remus do to anger Romulus? He jumped over a wall that he was building.
What did Romulus do to Remus after making him enraged? Romulus killed Remus and finished building the city.
What did Romulus name the city? Rome
What more likely happened? In the 700's, Latins settled in small villages on the 7 hills. They united to form the city of Rome.
Who else lived in the peninsula? The Etruscan in northern Italy & Greek colonists in southern Italy.
What happened in 620 B.C.? Rome came under the control of Etruscan kings and grew larger and more prosperous.
What did Romans learn to build with? Brick
What did they use? Arches
What did they learn how to do? Drain marshy lands
What was the Forum? The seat of the Roman government.
What happened in 509 B.C.? Romans overthrew the Etruscans and established the Roman Republic.
