| The Enlightenment | a movement that focused on reason and independent thinking |
| John Locke | an enlightenment philosopher who believed government's purpose was to serve the people |
| Salutary Neglect | 1706 - 1763 England's "hands-off" policy toward the American colonies. |
| George Whitfield | A preacher involved in the Great Awakening |
