autocratic | a rule by one person typically a dictator or absolute monarch |
democratic | rule by the people, citizens can vote and have a choice, political authority rest in the hands of the citizens |
chancellor | title given to the head of government in Germany , currently Olaf Scholtz |
political party | an organization that represents the specific political agenda and economic position of a nation |
president | title often given to the head of government (and State) in a presidential democracy |
prime minister | title often given to head of government in a parliamentary democracy |
parliament | the legislature in a parliamentary democracy |
legislative branch | make the laws ( parliament, congress in the USA ) |
Judicial branch | interprets the laws ( the judges, court systems) did you break the law the way the law is written? |
Executive branch | enforces the laws ( President, the police enforce laws) |
voting age | the age at which you can vote |
parliamentary democracy | citizens elect the legislature ( make laws) and pass laws on their behalf. Legislators are given the authority to chose the chief executive ( UK and Germany ) |
Presidential democracy | citizens elect the chief executive ( president) and the legislators ( makes laws) . The head of government (and state) is directly accountable to the voters. (ex. Russia) |

Head of State | they are typically symbolic and a ceremonial role, to represent the country at home and abroad , attend dinners, etc. |
Head of Government | they typically have real power and carry out the day to day responsibilities of running the government |
