Colonizer | A European country that took over an area on another country (England, Spain, France, Portugal, Dutch) |
Economic | Having to do with the money or trade of a country. |
Enslavement | To be owned, controlled, and forced to work for free by another person. |
Finished Product | A good that has been made from a natural resource and is ready to be sold. (Example: Wood benign turned into a chair) |
Fur Trade | The trade of animal furs between trappers in North America and Europe. |
Indentured Servant | A person who agrees to work for another person for a set period of time as payment for their trip from Europe to the Americas. |
Jamestown | The first permanent English colony in North America. |
Joint-Stock Company | When groups of wealthy Europeans put their money together to start a colony and shared the profits from the colony. |
Mercantilism | When a country tries to improve its economy by selling more goods to other countries and buying less goods. |
Middle Colonies | Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. These colonies relied heavily on trade and growing wheat and corn. |
Middle Passage | The route from Africa to North America where slaves were shipped across the Atlantic Ocean. |
Mother Country | A European country that took over an area on another country (England, Spain, France, Portugal, Dutch) |
Natural Resources | Resources that come from nature (iron, wood, stone, cash crops) |
New England Colonies | Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. Colonies that were the furthest north. These colonies had long winters and rocky soil; they relied mostly on fishing. |
Pilgrim | A colonist who traveled to Massachusetts for religious freedom. |
Plantation | A large farm where one type of cash crop was grown using slave labor. |
Slave | A person forced to work and be owned against their will. |
Southern Colonies | Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. These colonies were the furthest south and had warm climates. These colonies grew cash crops using slave labor. |
Trade | To buy and sell goods with another county. |
Triangular Trade | The trading of goods between North America, Europe, and Africa. |
Virginia Company | A joint-stock company that created the first English colonies in Virginia. |
