Astrolabe A tool sailors used to find their latitude based on the stars.
Caravel Ship A ship with triangular sails that could sail against the wind.
Christopher Columbus The explorer that is credited with creating the first colony in the Americas.
Colonization When one country takes over and controls land on another continent.
Colony An area of land owned and controlled by another country.
Columbian Exchange The movement of new plants, animals, insects, and diseases between Europe and the Americas.
Compass A tool that uses a magnet in order to show the direction North
Conquistador A Spanish explorer who took over and colonized parts of South America.
Economic Having to do with the money or trade of a country.
Enslavement To be owned and controlled by another person.
Explorer A person who left Europe in search of new lands to trade with or take over.
Exploration The act of searching for new land.
Francisco Pizarro A conquistador who took over the Incan Empire in South America for Spain.
Genocide The killing of a group of people.
Henry Hudson An explorer who discovered New York and the Hudson Valley for the Dutch.
Hernan Cortes A conquistador who took over the Aztec Empire in Mexico for Spain.
Mercator Projection The first type of flat map.
Mother Country/ Colonizer A European country that took over an area on another country (England, Spain, France, Portugal, Dutch)
Northwest Passage A route through North America to the Pacific Ocean many explorers looked for, but could not find because it didn’t exist.
Settlement A town created by colonists.
Slave A person forced to work and be owned against their will.
Trade To buy and sell goods with another county.
