TermDefinition
Indigenous Existing naturally in a place.
Assimilation To adopt the ways of another culture
Reservation Areas of land set aside for indigenous use.
Dawes Act Passed by Congress, this Act divided the reservations into smaller farm plots so that Natives would live more like white settlers.
Trail of Tears Over 4000 Cherokee died on this forced march while being relocated to reservations in Oklahoma.
Indian Removal Act of 1830 This act allowed the U.S. to exchange unclaimed lands west of the Mississippi for Indian territory.
Relocation To move from one place to another.
Battle of Little Bighorn/Greasy Grass This battle was a major victory for the Lakota Sioux, but a crushing defeat for the U.S. Army.
Massacre at Wounded Knee This resulted in the deaths of 150 -300 Indigenous men, women, and children, and marked the end of armed conflict between the US Army and the Plains Indians.
Chief Joseph Leader of the Nez Perce, this indigenous leader battled his way across Oregon to lead his people to safety in Canada, but was stopped by the U.S. Army.
Chief Sitting Bull Leader of the Lakota Sioux, this chieftain opposed the U.S. Government by leading the charge at the Battle of Greasy Grass.
Treaty An agreement made between two nations or groups of people.
