Vocabulary relating to our study of the Progressive Era
Term | Definition |

Settlement House | a house or institution that provided various community services to those in need, usually in bigger cities |
suffrage | the right to vote |
muckraker | someone who exposed corruption and wrong-doing, usually a journalist |
temperance | banning alcohol |
constituents | a person who authorizes another to act on their behalf, such as a voter in a district represented by an elected official. |
legislation | laws |
conservation | preserving natural resources like forests, rivers, etc. |
Meat Inspection Act | Law stating that meat now had to be inspected before it could be sold to people, resulting in a lot less people getting sick from spoiled meat. |
16th Amendment | Established an income tax for American workers. Now a portion of your wages goes toward paying your taxes. |
17th Amendment | Changed the way that Americans elect their senators. Senators are now directly elected by the people of a state. |
18th Amendment | Prohibition. Made alcohol illegal in the US. |
19th Amendment | Granted suffrage to all citizens so now women could vote. |
recall | Voters can now remove public (elected) officials from office. |
initiative | Constituents can now propose laws that they want. |
referendum | People can now vote directly on some laws rather than their representatives doing it. |
Interstate Commerce Act | Regulated the railroad industry and made it so that it could not be too powerful. |
Pure Food and Drug Act | Law that declared all food and prescriptions had to be labeled and that buyers have the right to know what is in the products they're buying. |
Upton Sinclair | wrote The Jungle which looked at bad conditions in a meat packing plant and lead to the passage of the Meat Inspection Act |
Ida B. Wells | African American, female activist who worked on equality for women African Americans and anti-lynching laws |
Susan B. Anthony | activist for women's suffrage |
W.E.B. DuBois | Founded the NAACP to work on civil rights issues and cases for African Americans |
Booker T. Washington | founded the Tuskegee Institute to help African Americans receive and education or training |
Jane Addams | opened a settlement house called Hull House in Chicago to help women, children and immigrants |
