Revolution Vocab

TermDefinition
Parliament branch of British government that makes and enforces laws
Boycott refusing to buy goods or services
Sons of Liberty secret society gathered to protest Britain's actions, led by Samuel Adams
Repeal to do away with a law (to get rid of)
Red Coats nickname for British soldiers
Intolerable unbearable, too bad, harsh or severe to be accepted
Quarter to provide shelter, food, and supplies for someone
Militia group of citizens organized to fight, not formally trained soldiers
Minutemen militia members who were ready to fight at a minute's notice
Patriots people who supported the Revolution and wanted independence from Britain
Loyalists people who supported the British government and wanted to remain loyal to the king
Neutral not choosing a side
Grievance a feeling of having been treated unfairly
Mercenaries foreign soldiers paid to fight
Stockpile to get and keep a large supply of something for future use
Smuggle to import or export goods without paying taxes on them
Treaty a formal agreement between two nations (usually ending a war)
Ally a country that helps another country in a time of war
Massacre the killing of many people who are unable to defend themselves
Liberty freedom
Consent permission to do something
Guerilla military strategy involving ambushes, raids, and sabotage
Search warrant a legal document that allows an officer to perform a search
Blockade war strategy where a nation uses ships to stop people or supplies from entering/leaving another country.
