TermDefinition
Consent: Giving permission.
Natural Rights: Fundamental freedoms individuals have just for existing.
Social Contract: An agreement between people and their government where they agree to follow rules in exchange for protection and order.
State of Nature: A theoretical situation where there are no rules or government, and people do as they please. (Freeland)
Aristocrats: People from the upper class who have a lot of wealth and power.
Civic Virtue: The idea of being a good and responsible citizen who works for the common good.
Common Good: Doing what is best for everyone in the community or society.
Delegate: A person chosen to represent others or a group at a meeting or event.
Representative Democracy: A system where people choose representatives to make decisions for them.
Direct Democracy: A system where people make decisions by voting on laws directly.
Faction: A small group within a larger group that has its own interests or goals.
Representative: Someone chosen to speak or act for others.
Republic: A country where leaders are elected by the people to represent their interests.
Oligarchy or Dictatorial Government: A government led by a small group of wealthy or powerful people or a single ruler with complete control.
Constitution: A written set of rules and principles that a government follows.
Constitutional Government: A government that operates according to a constitution.
Higher Law: Laws or principles that are above and must be followed by all other laws.
Limits: Boundaries or restrictions on what people or governments can do.
Monarchy: A system of government where a king or queen rules.
Private Domain: A person's personal and private space or property.
Separation of Powers: The idea that the government's power is divided among different branches to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful.
Checks and Balances: A system where each branch of government has some control over the others to prevent any one branch from having too much power.
