Editorial and Digital Terms

TermDefinitionUse Case
Quality Control (QC) A nebulous term used for many things that generally means due diligence in check material. QC can apply to pretty much anything Examples: Content QC = Editorial check of all fact checking and annotations performed by senior editor Veeva QC = checking tags and links in Veeva Bio QC = checking bios against the source material (CV, etc)
Closed captions Text on screen corresponding to video script and a direct written translation of the voice over audio. This is a great tool for accessibility, and it should be considered early and worked into the budget.
Back end Back-end development means working on server-side software, which focuses on everything you can't see on a website. Back-end developers ensure the website performs correctly, focusing on databases, back-end logic, APIs, architecture, and servers. Back end and front end are "hooked up" to make the site functional and populate the URL
Fact checking The process of checking content against the source material, typically journal articles, government websites, textbooks. Anything that has content with data.
Transcription Video audio is translated to a written script word-for-word. Raw footage can be sent for transcription prior to editing. Transcript can be used to identify best takes.
Front end Front-end web development is the development of the graphical user interface of a website, using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, so that users can view and interact with that website. It is the main visual design of the site. Back end and front end are "hooked up" to make the site functional and populate the URL
Copy Edit Pre-layout/format of full edit up to the discretion of the editor. Examples: Manuscript of content pre-layout, Bios This becomes the “original” for the readback post-layout. Routes only through Copy Services and Editorial at this step.
Phonetic script The written text of the audio/closed caption of a video. Typically written before the video is recorded or created/animated.
HTML The HyperText Markup Language or HTML is the standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser. It defines the meaning and structure of web content. We use HTML to code many of our websites
Rough cut When footage is cut/spliced together after a video shoot, to approve content. This is before any editing is done. Done after filming, prior to more in-depth editing.
Site map A schematic view of the pages of a website and how they connect to one another (via buttons/links). First step in web design process, submitted to Veeva with wireframe/layout.
