Anicen Regime "old"; the social and political system in France where the people were divided into three social classes or estates
Bourgeoisie the middle class, including merchants, industrialists, and professional people
Estates General An assembly of representatives from all three of the estates, or social classes, in France.
National Assembly 3rd estate declaration that it was the only true govt. in France
Tennis Court Oath vow by members of the 3rd estate not to disband until a constitution was written
Bastille A prison fortress in Paris that was attacked and destroyed on July 14, 1789 at the start of the French revolution
National Guard An armed force made up of ordinary French people to help the revolution.
Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen Adopted August 26, 1789, created by the National Assembly to give rights to all (except women).
Olympe de Gouges French journalist who demanded equal rights for women.
King Louis XIV of France Ruled with an iron fist for 60 years, and always wanted war. Believed in Divine Right theory, in which God chose him to rule over the masses and that anyone who challenged him would be challenging God.
Marie Antoinette Queen of France (as wife of Louis XVI) who was unpopular her extravagance and opposition to reform contributed to the overthrow of the monarchy; she was guillotined along with her husband (1755-1793)
Legislative Assembly A French congress with the power to create laws and approve declarations of war, established by the constitution of 1791.
Jacobins Radical republicans during the French Revolution. They were led by Maximilien Robespierre from 1793 to 1794.
San-culottes They were the urban poor; they were the cooks/servants who were paid low wages and were often out of work
Committee of Public Safety Powerful group, led by Robespierre, set up to defeat all enemies of the revolution.
Robespierre lead revolution, Committee of Public Safety, blamed for Reign of terror, executed at the end.
Reign of Terror This was the period in France where Robespierre ruled and used revolutionary terror to solidify the home front. He tried rebels and they were all judged severely and most were executed.
Guillotine A machine for beheading people, used as a means of execution during the French Revolution.
The Directory Established after the Reign of Terror / National Convention; a five-man group as the executive branch of the country; incompetent and corrupt, only lasted for 4 years.
Waterloo The site of Napoleon's defeat by British and Prussian armies in 1815, which ended his last bid for power
Nationalism A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country
Continental System Napoleon's efforts to block foreign trade with England by forbidding Importation of British goods Into Europe.
Napoleonic Code A comprehensive and uniform system of laws established for France by Napoleon
Coup d'etat A sudden overthrow of the government by a small group
Napoleon Bonaparte Overthrew the French revolutionary government (The Directory) in 1799 and became emperor of France in 1804. Failed to defeat Great Britain and abdicated in 1814. Returned to power briefly in 1815 but was defeated and died in exile.
