Imperialism The use of diplomatic or military force to extend a nations power and enhance its economic interest. Often done by gaining territories.

Yellow Journalism news reporting, often biased or untrue, that relies on sensational stories and headlines. Hearst and Pulitzer
De Lome Letter The Spanish ambassador insults President McKinley in this document; accused America of being weak. The letter was stolen by Cuban revolutionaries.
Teller Amendment (1898) Declared that the US was to annex Cuba as a territory but to ensure their independence.
Rough Riders Volunteer regiment of US Cavalry led by Teddy Roosevelt during the Spanish American War
American Anti-Imperialist League Coalition of anti-imperialist groups united in 1899 to protest American territorial expansion, especially in the Philippine Islands; its membership included prominent politicians, industrialists, labor leaders, and social reformers.
Open Door Policy Chinese trade would be open to all the nations. John hay announced this. Hope was to protect the Chinese market for US exports.
Roosevelt Corollary Roosevelt's 1904 extension of the Monroe Doctrine, stating that the United States has the right to protect its economic interests in South And Central America by using military force
Dollar Diplomacy Us government fostered American investments in less developed nations and then used US military force to protect those investments.
U.S. battleship Maine American warship that exploded in the Cuban port of Havana 1898; though the result of an accident, the destruction of the Maine was attributed by war-hungry Americans to Spain, contributing to the onset of the War of 1812. Spanish American war.
