The Skin

What is the skin also known as? The cutaneous layer
What does the integumentary system include? Skin, nails, hair, and glands
The skin is made up of which two parts? Epidermis and dermis
How does the skin protect from bacteria? unbroken surface, acid secretion, and phagocytes
How does the skin protect from mechanical damage? keratin and nerves
How does the skin protect from chemical damage? keratin
How does the skin protect from UV radiation? melanin
How does the skin protect from thermal damage? nerves
How does the skin protect from desiccation? lipid and keratin
What does desiccation mean? drying out
What are lipids? fat
How does the skin maintain a stable body temperature? Sweating which helps lose heat and blood flow restriction can help with keeping heat in.
How does the skin excrete waste? by sweating urea and uric acid but it doesn't happen very much
How does the skin synthesize vitamin D? by converting cholesterol into vitamin D through the sunlight?
What is not true about vitamin D and the sun? The sun does not produce vitamin D
