| Term | Definition |

| Map key | explains the symbols and shading on a map |
| Scale bar | shows how much space on a map represents a given distance on the land |
| Physical Map | shows physical, or natural, features on a map (ex: mountains, rivers, and bodies of water) |
| Political Map | shows political units (ex: countries, states, capitals, and major cities) |
| Special-Purpose Maps | shows the location or distribution of human or physical features (ex: election results, highway map, or weather patterns) |
| Precipitation | water that falls to the ground as rain, snow, sleet, or hail |
| Temperature | a measure of how hot or cold the air is |
| Polar zones | areas north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle |
| Tropics | areas located nearest the equator; also known as low latitudes |
| Temperate Zones | areas between the high and low latitudes |
| Erosion | a process in which water, ice, or wind removes small pieces of rock |
| Spillover | an effect on someone or something not involved in the activity |
| Region | an area with at least one unifying physical or human feature such as a climate, landforms, population, or history |
| Longitude | These vertical lines run east to west and measure north to south |
| Latitude | These horizontal lines runs north to south and measure east to west |
| Equator | This horizontal line is located at 0 degrees latitude and it splits the Earth in half (top and bottom) |
| Prime Meridian | This vertical line is located at 0 degrees longitude and it splits the Earth in half (right and left) |
| Biodiversity | variety of living things; can be reduced due to deforestation and drilling wells |
| Industrialization | machine-powered production; has changed landscapes since the 1800's |
| Settlers | May change a region's landscape |
