Causes of the American Revolution

QuestionAnswer
Proclamation of 1763 A proclamation (law) from the British government which forbade British colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains, and which required any settlers already living west of the mountains to move back east. Created the "Line of Proclamation."
Stamp Act A widely unpopular tax put on printed items (newspapers, playing cards...) to help Britain pay their debt.
Sugar Act law passed by the British Parliament setting taxes on sugar imported by the colonies
Townshend Act 1767- small tax on goods such as glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea
Quartering Act 1765 - Required the colonials to provide food, lodging, and supplies for the British troops in the colonies.
Boston Massacre 1770 - A confrontation between British soldiers and unarmed colonists that resulted in 5 of the colonists being killed.
Boston Tea Party The Sons of Liberty, disguised as Indians, dumped crates of tea into the Boston Harbor to show their anger over the Tea Act.
Intolerable Acts The four acts that were passed by Britain in response to the Boston Tea Party
Boycott A refusal to buy or use goods and services.
Tea Act Law passed allowing the British East India Company to sell its low-cost tea directly to the colonies; led to the Boston Tea Party
Debt something, typically money, that is owed or due
Lexington and Concord 1st battle of the Revolutionary War
Paul Revere A patriot who helped warn colonists about British movements and made the engraving of the Boston Massacre
No taxation without representation Reflected the colonists' belief that they should not be taxed because they had no direct representatives in the British government
Loyalists American colonists who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence
Taxes Required payments to a government
Patriots American colonists who were determined to fight the British until American independence was won
French and Indian War A war in North America between France and Britain (both aided by Native tribes)
